In a pioneering online auction, the skeleton of Trey the Triceratops was recently acquired for a stunning $5.5 million via JOOPITER, a digital-first platform for commerce and content founded by Pharrell Williams. This transaction established a new benchmark for dinosaur skeletons sold in online-only auctions.

The auction, revealed in early March 2026, garnered worldwide attention. While dinosaur skeletons are typically linked to museums, this particular piece of natural history can now belong to a private collector. Trey’s skeleton, remarkably intact, offers a view into the ancient periods of Earth.

Dating back over 66 million years, Trey was discovered in 1993 in the Lance Formation close to Lusk, Wyoming. Prior to the auction, this 7-foot-3-inch-tall triceratops had been exhibited for thirty years at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center in Thermopolis, drawing in 1 million visitors.
