Workers Picket American Folk Art Museum Gala Demanding Higher Wages

Workers at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City staged a protest during the museum’s annual gala at the Mandarin Oriental on May 6, 2026. The demonstration, organized by UAW Local 2110, was in response to stalled contract negotiations for nearly two years, with demands for higher wages and improved benefits.

Union members and workers picketed outside the hotel holding signs with slogans, highlighting the need for fair wages. Eve Erickson, a development associate, emphasized the essential role of staff in the museum’s operations. Employees earn $19 per hour, which is below the living wage in New York City, and are seeking a wage increase to $30 per hour over three years. However, the museum’s offer of $21.50 per hour without guaranteed benefits was deemed inadequate.

The workers’ frustration grew as contract talks dragged on and several positions were outsourced during a renovation period of the museum’s 2 Lincoln Square building. Despite the efforts, museum officials have not disclosed the gala’s fundraising totals or when negotiations will conclude. The protest saw support from some trustees and honorees, with hopes for a resolution that ensures fair compensation for the museum’s staff.
