Cutting-Edge Architectural Design for Climate-Adaptable Island Communities
Fiji stands out as one of the nations most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. In an effort to provide solutions to the issues confronting its citizens, MASK Architects, known for inventing the inaugural self-recharging motorcycle, envisioned a living concept for a future where current infrastructure is susceptible. The Fiji Solar Crown is a design that unifies all necessary elements to ensure continuous energy and water supply, all enveloped in an attractive and chic aesthetic.
“When infrastructure collapses on an island, the consequences are immediate and unmistakable,” assert the designers. “There’s no backup, no alternative network, no remote reservoir to balance the situation. Energy uncertainty, water shortage, and ecological pressure intersect directly with everyday existence.” Accordingly, MASK Architect perceives the Fiji Solar Crown as a framework for response rather than just an architectural entity.
The outcome is the world’s pioneering dual-axis concave parabolic solar crown living system. Constructed from laminated bamboo, native Fijian hardwoods, bamboo-fiber composites, and eco-friendly geopolymer concrete, the buildings are securely attached to a ground base or floating foundations, tailored to the circumstances. The structure is designed to generate renewable energy and supply fresh water while also serving as a climate-resilient living space.
The term “crown” in its title relates to the dynamic concave solar mirror that crowns the living units. These components can rotate and tilt to track sunlight and capture energy. Their shape further enables them to collect rainwater along the edge, which is then filtered through the central core and reserved for daily consumption. Collectively, they function to maintain the tropical micro-climate within the structure, ensuring comfort for its inhabitants.
The concave mirrors are available in three sizes: 9.84 feet (3 meters), 16.4 feet (5 meters), and 22.9 feet (7 meters). The smallest can power an off-grid shelter, while the largest, capable of generating up to 21,000 kWh/year, can accommodate a multi-story residence. By night, the built-in under-glow lighting ring in each mirror illuminates in blue, making it visible from afar.
“Beyond ecological efficiency, the system is thoughtfully designed to bolster Fiji’s long-term resilience by enhancing local job opportunities, promoting craftsmanship, enabling new eco-tourism ventures, and replacing expensive fossil fuel reliance with locally sourced renewable energy,” state MASK Architects.
