Gardens by the Bay in Singapore to Incorporate Immersive teamLab Museum and Wetlands Development
At Gardens by the Bay, the future already evokes a dreamlike quality. This award-winning gardenscape in Singapore features majestic Supertrees that illuminate the night, while mist swirls in the Cloud Forest and brilliant flowers welcome guests at every corner. Now, this iconic site is gearing up for one of its most ambitious transformations yet: an extensive expansion dubbed Wetlands by the Bay, integrating immersive art, ecology, and communal areas into a holistic experience.
At the heart of this new endeavor is a premier museum by teamLab. Renowned for their innovative digital installations, the collective is reimagining the way audiences interact with art. However, this will not resemble a conventional museum. Instead of merely traversing galleries, guests will navigate a fluid setting where art comes to life amidst water and flora in an open environment. The expansive 12,000-square-meter (almost 130,000-square-foot) facility will be nestled within a broader wetlands habitat, with visitors exploring by kayak. As they gently glide along a managed waterway, images will dance across mangroves and mirror the water’s surface below. Since the exhibits react to movement, every visit will offer a unique experience.
Wetlands by the Bay will transform the adjacent landscapes. The current Kingfisher Wetlands will nearly triple its area, evolving into a 5-hectare (12.4-acre) ecosystem filled with mangroves and tens of thousands of plants. Moreover, raised boardwalks will direct visitors throughout the area while safeguarding the environment. Guests will have the opportunity to stop at serene viewing spots, where they might observe birds, aquatic creatures, and subtle shifts in the ecosystem. Collectively, the design embodies an increasing emphasis on biodiversity and positions the gardens as a blueprint for sustainable urban living.
In addition to the natural aspects, the expansion will also bring fresh gathering spaces. For example, a boardwalk elevated above the wetlands will provide sweeping views of the lush surroundings and water below. Simultaneously, an open lawn will serve as a venue for events and public activities. Along the waterfront, new dining establishments will overlook the mangroves and Marina Reservoir, making even a simple meal an immersive experience. To enhance accessibility, a new bridge will link various sections of the gardens and encourage visitors to wander more freely. The project is slated for a phased opening beginning late 2028, with different components launched incrementally.
Since its inception in 2012, Gardens by the Bay has redefined public gardens by fusing horticulture, architecture, and technology. Consequently, the area feels both avant-garde and rooted in nature. With this expansion, the gardens extend that vision even further by inviting visitors to engage rather than just observe.
Soon, guests will glide through meticulously designed landscapes instead of merely passing by. Ultimately, they will navigate through shifting light as greenery envelops them and water flows gently nearby, allowing the lines between art and nature to blur.
Gardens by the Bay announced a significant expansion that will introduce a new wetland landscape and immersive experiences.
A flagship museum by teamLab will enable visitors to engage with digital art by traversing water-filled settings.
The initiative will reshape the gardens into a more interconnected, eco-centric destination that fuses art, nature, and community spaces.
