An Extensive Exhibit Highlights U.S. History Via ‘A Nation of Artists’

Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967), “The Lee Shore,” 1941, Oil on canvas, 28 1/4 x 43 in, The Middleton Family Collection

The United States is set to mark its 250th anniversary in 2026, with celebrations taking various forms. One aspect focuses on historical reflection, examining the journey the nation has undertaken since its inception. The exhibition *A Nation of Artists* addresses this by exploring visual culture, particularly how artistic output has been influenced by exchange, expansion, conflict, and innovation. Indeed, nothing is produced in isolation. Art—and personal creativity—mirrors culture.

*A Nation of Artists* is being showcased simultaneously at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA). Each venue organizes the exhibited pieces differently. PAFA adopts a thematic strategy, featuring art from the late 18th century up to the present and categorizing works with considerations of westward expansion, industrial growth, and a progressively global landscape. In contrast, PMA, which is currently commemorating its 150th anniversary, presents the artwork in chronological order, illustrating American art from 1700 to 1960 while noting parallel themes to PAFA, such as global exchange, technological advancement, and changing cultural economics (plenty for some, scarcity for others).

Regardless of the methodology, both establishments are tracing art through over 1,000 pieces comprising paintings, photographs, sculptures, and decorative arts. This includes more than 120 seldom-seen works from the Middleton Family Collection, recognized as one of the U.S.’s most notable private collections of American art.

“Our goal is for this exhibition to be accessible to everyone—no prior knowledge of art or history needed,” states John S. Middleton. “We believe storytelling possesses the ability to unite people and are excited to collaborate with these two distinguished institutions to present the works that have provided our family with immense joy and inspiration. Much like baseball, art has the potential to connect individuals and surprise us when we least expect it. With each viewing, there’s always something new to uncover. It’s a privilege to help animate American art in a fresh way during this unique 250th anniversary celebration of our nation’s foundation.”

*A Nation of Artists* will be displayed at PMA until July 5, 2027, and at PAFA until September 5, 2027.
